Fear creates more fear
Dec 09, 2025I have a deep love for all things Star Wars. Yoda (imho) is a wonderful teacher of simple wisdom. There’s a moment where Yoda explains the path of the dark side, describing how fear begins quietly and then builds into something much larger. He explains that fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and over time that turns into suffering, and while it sounds like a sequence, it is really describing something that can happen quickly and often without much awareness.
You can see this play out clearly in Anakin, where his fear of losing what matters to him begins to shape how he thinks, and that fear does not stay contained. It starts to influence his decisions, his reactions, and the way he interprets what is happening around him, often without him recognising it in the moment.
What sits underneath that is attachment. When something feels important, there is a natural tendency to hold onto it, whether that is a person, an outcome, or a sense of how things should unfold. As that grip tightens, it becomes harder to stay steady when things shift, and the reaction often becomes stronger than the situation itself.
This is where the idea of letting go begins to make more sense. It is not about stepping away from what matters or becoming passive, but about changing how tightly you are holding onto the outcome. When the grip softens, your thinking tends to open up, and you are able to see what is actually happening rather than reacting to what you fear might happen.
That shift creates space in how you respond. Instead of being pulled into the reaction, you are able to move with more awareness, and over time this tends to reduce the build up that Yoda is describing. When you reflect on your own experience, there are likely moments where fear has shaped your thinking more than the situation itself, and others where stepping back has changed how you responded.
