Spiral Dynamics (part 1)

Human evolution can be thought of like a spiral staircase. You move up over time, but you can also move down depending on what life is asking of you. If you are serious about growing, it helps to have a way of making sense of that movement. Spiral Dynamics, developed by Clare Graves and later expanded by Don Beck, offers a way to understand how your thinking evolves, and why your worldview can differ from others.

At its core, Spiral Dynamics is a way of understanding how people think, respond, and move through the world. What can often feel unpredictable starts to form a pattern when you look at it through this lens. You begin to see how different worldviews take shape over time, and why two people can experience the same situation in completely different ways.

Within this model, there are a series of stages. Each stage represents a way of making sense of the world at a point in time, shaped by the conditions someone has lived through and the problems they have had to solve. As life changes, so does the way we think about it. No level is inherently better or worse than another.

Each person tends to have what is called a centre of gravity, which is the level they return to most often in how they see things and respond. That centre is not fixed. You may notice that you move up or down depending on your environment, the pressures you are under, and what life is asking of you in that moment.

As you move through these stages, there is also a natural rhythm between focusing on yourself and focusing on others. Some stages are more self focused, while others are more collective. Both are necessary, and development often involves moving between the two.

A helpful way to understand growth is through the idea of “transcend and include.” As you develop, you move beyond earlier ways of thinking, but you do not lose them. They remain part of you, and you may still draw on them depending on the situation. Growth is not about replacing who you were. It is about expanding your capacity so you can respond with more range and awareness.

What sits underneath all of this is a simple idea. Human nature is not fixed. As life conditions change, the way you think needs to change with them. When the challenges you face become more complex, the thinking that once worked may no longer be enough. That creates a natural pressure to adapt, and over time, this leads to more developed ways of making sense of the world.

In this sense, growth is shaped by two things. The life conditions you are facing, and your ability to respond to them. When those conditions change, new ways of thinking are often required. If you remain open to that, your capacity continues to expand. If you resist it, things can begin to feel stuck.
